This Click zooms in on a sewer cover stamped with a steamship and the words “City of Redondo Beach – Incorporated April 29th 1892,” a tiny cast‑iron postcard from the days when this shoreline was an early Port of Los Angeles served by rail lines and lumber schooners. A couple of blocks away, the same waterfront later hosted Hawaiian‑Irish surfer George Freeth, who arrived in 1907, wowed crowds off the pier, organized California’s first surf club here and helped turn Redondo into one of the birthplaces of West Coast beach culture. Fast‑forward to now and those piers and rail yards have morphed into marinas, bike paths and festivals like BeachLife and the Lobster Festival, so even this manhole cover is basically saying: under the asphalt, this town is still built on ships, waves and big seaside parties.
